The 2017 GAR Awards shortlist for Best Innovation marked a pivotal moment for international arbitration by spotlighting initiatives that advance transparency and diversity. In this context, the Equal Representation in Arbitration Pledge emerged as a pioneering global effort aimed at addressing the longstanding under-representation of women in the field, with over 1,600 signatories committing to more balanced appointments. Alongside this, the “Puppies or Kittens” proposal challenged conventional practices by encouraging arbitrators to disclose their procedural preferences, thereby assisting parties in aligning their expectations with emerging talent.
Complementing these efforts is the Arbitrator Intelligence initiative, which employs a dedicated questionnaire to systematically gather performance data and feedback on arbitrators, fostering a more meritocratic selection process. Collectively, these innovations signal a transformative shift in international arbitration—one that moves away from a traditionally insular and imbalanced framework towards a more inclusive, transparent, and dynamic future.
