Dr. Patricia Galloway

Dr. Patricia Galloway, International Chartered Arbitrator at Galloway Arbitration, passed away (1957-2024)

Dr. Patricia Galloway was an international arbitrator and mediator with over 40 years of experience. Based in the United States, Patricia was a Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) fellow, a Dispute Review Board (DRB) member, and a College of Commercial Arbitrators fellow. She specialized in energy and construction matters. A non-lawyer and civil engineer, Patricia was the first woman president of the American Society of Civil Engineers. She was a trailblazing woman both in the field of international arbitration and mediation as well as in her engineering career.

In March 2020, ArbitralWomen featured Patricia in its Newsletter (below). Former ArbitralWomen Board member Vanina Sucharitkul wrote: “Patricia Galloway almost did not become an engineer. Although she grew up with a mother who told her she could be anything, Galloway realised this was not the case for many young and ambitious women like her. Galloway talks about the challenges as a woman to become an engineer and a renowned arbitrator and how more women can break the glass ceiling. Trained as a civil engineer, in 2004, Galloway became the first female President of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), was appointed by President George W. Bush to the National Science Board (NSB) from 2006 to 2012, [was] director of the American Arbitration Association (AAA), and was recently awarded “2019-One of the Most Influential Corporate Board of Directors” by Women’s Inc.”

Patricia was also the mother of six children who survive her along with her husband. A memorial service will be held for her on October 19, 2024 at 2pm at Unionville Ranch, Cle Elum, Washington.

The American Society of Civil Engineers published the following obituary of Patricia which highlights her many notable accomplishments: https://www.asce.org/publications-and-news/civil-engineering-source/article/2024/10/03/pat-galloway-a-breaker-of-glass-ceilings-and-asces-first-female-president-in-2004-dies-at-67.
